I finished two new quilts this fall. The first was a baby quilt for Madeline Stapp, the new daughter of my good friend Sabrina. The second was a denim jeans quilt, based on the same design, made out of worn out old pairs of jeans. My intent was for the jeans quilt to be auctioned off at the Harvest Festival for our church, St. Johns, but I wasn’t able to finish the quilt in time. I’m not sure what I will do with the quilt now. Perhaps I will wait until next year’s Harvest Festival or maybe I will give it to Father Johnson or Catholic Social Services and have it given to a family in need.

It took me long enough to get around to it, but I finally updated my family icon to include our newest family member, Nadia.

I want to give God thanks for the many blessings he has given to my family over the past year. We have truly been blessed! I am looking forward to seeing relatives and eating some good food. I hope everyone has safe travels and I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

The next exhibition in the Robert Hillestad Gallery, Grandma’s Talking to Ghosts: A Family History Reclaimed is the Option II masters project exhibition for my friend Jennifer Graham. An opening reception and talk will be held Sunday Nov. 30, 2008 3-5 p.m. The show will run through December 19th, 2008. Her work is inspired by history, emigration, and her ancestral roots in Iceland—where mythology and remembrance hold a prominent place in the culture. The exhibition incorporates wool, silk, linen and paper. The space her soft sculpture creates evokes the ethereal nature of memory, the deterioration of family history, and the beauty that can be discovered through grief. I am looking forward to the exhibition!

Last week we few Nadia rice cereal for the first time. Aidan started cereal a bit earlier than Nadia – around four months old. This time we waited a full six months with Nadia. It is fun to see how interested and excited she seems to be with “big people food” recently!

I normally buy Pampers diapers. Yes, I know they are more expensive, but when I buy diapers I try to look for sales, use coupons, and buy in bulk, which brings the cost down a little bit. When Aidan was a small baby I tried other cheaper and generic brands of diapers, but ultimately they did not fit as well, leaked, and led to ruined outfits. The Pampers diapers worked much better, so we ended up sticking with them.
Aidan has a potty chair, which he will sit on and has even requested to go to the potty and used it. However as much as I had hoped that he would have been potty trained before we now have two little ones in diapers, it will probably be a while yet before he is completely potty trained. A few months ago I went to Target to buy diapers because Aidan was literally down to his last diaper. We needed diapers! I was about to grab the Pampers, but there wasn’t a sale. I noticed that Target had their brand of diapers marked down to a price that was almost $7 less for a box with 20 more diapers than the Pampers. That is a significant savings! Aidan goes through a lot of diapers, and now with another little one here there will be even more diapers. I didn’t care for the Target diapers much when Aidan was small, but I hadn’t tried them in larger sizes and thought maybe I should give them a try. Our budget is stretched pretty thin, if we could save this much each time we buy diapers it would be helpful.
Unfortunately I was not very impressed with the Target diapers compared to the Pampers. The diapers were less absorbent than the Pampers, so Aidan has been going through the Target diapers at a faster rate than the Pampers. The diapers also don’t fit as well and come off more easily. This is not a good thing when it means that a toddler thinks it is funny to take off his diaper for the dozenth time and hand it to me, or even worse decides to drop it on the floor. Pampers diapers at least tend to land poop side up, Target diapers – not so much. The Target diapers also tended to leak, staining Aidan’s clothes.:-(.
Target wipes on the other hand are SUPER! (and a good deal to boot) :-)Overall I think I will continue to stick with the Pampers but continue to shop for diapers in bulk, on sale, and with coupons. They may be more expensive but I think it may be worth it. Hopefully Aidan will be potty trained SOON!

Last week Warren sent me a “piece of flair” for Facebook and in the last week I think I’ve gone a little overly flair crazy!

After over a year of hearing campaigning the election is finally over. In my opinion there were some good and some not-so-good aspects to both major candidates. The people of our country have spoken and I am very optimistic about the future. I am happy that Aidan and Nadia will grow up where it is possible for anyone regardless of race to break the barriers of racism and become president. Congratulations to our new president-elect Barack Obama! I pray that God will bless him and guide him in leading our nation.

I’ve done a fairly good job of updating photos on my facebook page, but not on my blog. I’ll try add some more photos as well as articles here soon. In the meantime here’s a picture of the cute Tigger and Pooh costumes Jeremy made for Aidan and Nadia. (He’s so talented!) I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!.

I am sorry that my blog has languished so much lately! I have started to write (but never finished) posts on several topics including moving my studio space downstairs and getting the room ready for the new baby, the opening of the new IQSC Museum, about the comparative value of Pampers vs. Target diapers, a review of the new R.E.M. album Accelerate, and more on my political stances.
Unfortunately getting ready for the arrival of the new baby and life with a toddler (and now also a newborn) have occupied my time to the extent I haven’t kept up with the blog as I should. Look for upcoming posts soon on catch-up material. I will also try to do better at adding new material. I have at least finally added some new pictures of Nadia and Aidan.
